Sri Lanka

Memorial

Located at the underwater seas of the district of Matara. Constructed with an artificial reef composed by coral balls produced in collaboration with Reef Ball Foundation. Arranged in the sculptural form of a lotus flower, meaning fertility and life to the Sri Lankan culture. The design of the memorial shows two ornamental lotus flowers: one huge flower, with a diameter of 60 meters and eleven smaller flowers that surround it with a diameter of 12 meters each. It has 35 columns that represent one of each thousand victims in Sri Lanka, and also the fishing culture in crutches. 24 of these columns contained in the main flower correspond to the 240,000 victims of the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Benefits of the Memorial:

  • It indicates the positive aspects of the ocean as a life-giver.
  • It symbolizes hope, healing and thoughtfulness and it is a place that commemorates all the lost souls in the Tsunami of 2004.
  • It nurses and gives life where it didn’t exist previously. In 1998, because of the phenomenon Niño, Sri Lanka lost more than 98% of its coral reefs.
  • It is used as an incubator of the species in that zone.
  • It is an excellent spot to dive and a tourist attraction point for divers around the world.
  • It promotes awareness of ecology and respect towards the sea environment.
  • It provides a fertile space to carry out biological marine investigation thanks to the link with the University of Ruhuna.
